Japanese Delegation Visits Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development’s Office of International Business Development recently hosted a Japanese delegation led by Ambassador and Consul General, Mikio Mori. Team PA’s President & CEO Abby Smith joined the delegation, attending conversations that serve as a platform to foster friendship and collaboration between Pennsylvania and Japan. Japan is one of our most valued trade partners, and we aim to continually strengthen bilateral economic ties between Japan and Pennsylvania.

Japan, a formidable economic and technological hub in East Asia, combines a rich cultural heritage with a strong global presence. Japan excels in R&D, spearheading progress in renewable energy, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and electronics. This presents significant opportunities for trade and investment with Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania/Japan Facts (2023)

• 407 Japanese firms are invested in Pennsylvania and employ more than 21,000 people.
• Pennsylvania imports goods valued at $3.9 billion from Japan, including Pharmaceutical Products, Industrial Machinery (including Computers), Optical, Medical, or Surgical Instruments, Electric Machinery, and Vehicles (excluding Railway or Tramway, and Parts).
• Pennsylvania exports goods worth $2.23 billion to Japan, comprising Pharmaceutical Products, Mineral Fuel and Oil, Optical, Medical, or Surgical Instruments, Natural and Cultured Pearls, Precious or Semi-Precious Stones, and Inorganic chemicals & rare-earth materials.
• Pennsylvania has two very active Japan-America Societies in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Both organizations promote Japanese culture, language and economic cooperation. The Japan-America Society of Greater Philadelphia hosts a Cherry Blossom Festival annually with attendance of more than 40,000.
